The Port of Baku and Malaysia's Tiza Green Enegry LLC launched the first project integrating Azerbaijan's solar energy with a BESS system within the framework of COP29
Today, as an important development for Azerbaijan's renewable energy sector, the Port of Baku and Tiza Green Energy LLC, a joint venture established by Tiza Global Azerbaijan LLC and Citaglobal Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Citaglobal, signed a framework agreement for the construction of a 5.4 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system. This will be the first implementation of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) integrated with solar energy in Azerbaijan.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Taleh Ziyadov, Director-General of the Port of Baku and President and Executive Chairman of Tiza Green Energy, Dr. Norza Zakaria in the Blue Zone of the Azerbaijan Pavilion in the COP29 venue. The commissioning of a 5.4 MW solar photovoltaic system at the Port of Baku is an important step forward in Azerbaijan's transition to clean energy. Tiza Green Energy will install BESS system from Citaglobal, and this will make it possible to use a portion of the solar energy produced for the port's needs, while the remaining energy will be stored in the BESS system and used later when needed. According to the agreement, solar panels will be installed on the rooftops of the buildings within the port area. Once the project is completed, the system will contribute to the Port of Baku’s status as a Green Port, aimed at improving energy security through reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy efficiency and using renewable sources. “As the first Green Port in the Caspian region since 2019, we have implemented significant measures to minimize our environmental impact. Our strategy is to achieve zero emissions by 2035, and I am confident that our partnership with Tiza Green Energy will position us as leaders in sustainable practices, significantly reducing our Scope 2 emissions. The integration of solar and BESS technology brings unprecedented energy management capabilities, reinforcing our commitment to both economic and environmental stewardship,” said Dr. Taleh Ziyadov, Director-General of the Port of Baku. “This agreement marks a major milestone in advancing Azerbaijan’s renewable energy landscape with an innovative solution that seamlessly integrates solar power and BESS technology. The solution that we are implementing will not only increase the use of clean energy in the Port of Baku, but also contribute to sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions." said Dr. Norza Zakaria, President and Executive Chairman of Tiza Green Energy. At the same time, as part of the event, Port of Baku presented a carpet with the COP29 inscription and logo to the guests, and Tiza Green Energy presented the Port of Baku with a valuable painting on a solar panel.
The agreement was signed on Green Energy Day at COP29 - which today reflects Azerbaijan's logical and well-calculated goal of implementing innovative energy solutions, advancing global climate goals, and increasing the share of renewable sources in the energy complex to 60% by 2050.
