Baku Hosts Inaugural Caspian Blue Horizons Workshop on the Eve of COP29

Baku, Azerbaijan – June 10, 2024 – The Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC (Port of Baku), ADA University and IDEA (International Dialogue for Environmental Action) Public Union proudly announce the co-hosting of the 1st Caspian Blue Horizons Workshop. Supported by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Switzerland, this initiative aims to bring together stakeholders globally to tackle environmental challenges in the Caspian Sea region.

Commencing at ADA University on June 10-11, 2024, the inaugural workshop marks the start of discussions ahead of COP29 Azerbaijan in November 2024, underscoring its importance and alignment with international climate goals. With a primary focus on enhancing resilience and sustainability of the relatively unexplored Caspian Sea, the event serves as a crucial platform for interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders, highlighting the principles of sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

The workshop featured a keynote address by Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan and COP29 President-Designate, underscoring Azerbaijan's strategic vision for environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and global connectivity. Additional insights were provided by Dr. Taleh Ziyadov, Director-General of the Port of Baku, Ms. Nigar Arpadarai, Member of Azerbaijani Parliament and COP29 Champion, as well as Dr. Elnur Soltanov, Deputy Minister of Energy and CEO of COP29.

Approximately 100 participants, including more than 30 distinguished scholars and scientists from 15 leading universities and academic institutions across 12 countries, are actively contributing to various thematic panels of the event. Moreover, the workshop has attracted high-level government officials, heads of diplomatic institutions, private sector leaders, and representatives from international and civil organizations.

Continuing the momentum from Baku, plans are underway for the 2nd workshop to convene in Switzerland in September 2024. These series of workshops underscore Azerbaijan's commitment to fostering international cooperation in studying the Caspian Sea and its connected region, paving the way for a better tomorrow.
